Aromatherapy – What is that
Your sense of smell is a very under-used method of boosting moods, encouraging good health and relieving stress. Aromatherapy is a technique that does just that, allowing our olfactory sense to be treated with a variety of pleasant fragrances. Results vary according to the fragrance used.
To stimulate the body, peppermint and eucalyptus scents are most often used. To relax, try using lavender and chamomile. For revitalizing a tired body, use lemon and rosemary. Be sure to utilize your powerful sense of smell. Most people can distinguish between 10,000 different scents!
Inhaled scents can effect parts of our brains associated with mood control, memory association, and our abilty to learn! The scent travels across olfactory nerves located inside the nose and up into a particular area of the brain. When this area is stimulated it releases endorphins, neurotransmitters, and many other feel good chemicals. The area that is stimulated is called the Limbic System, producing these great feelings.
Essential oils extracted from fruits, plants, flowers and herbs are absorbed into the bloodstream during your aromatherapy sessions. If you have rubbed fragrant lotion, cream or ointment into your skin, or if you have ever received a massage, you have experienced a form of this safe aromatherapy.
Commonly added to room sprays, perfumes, vaporizers, bath salts, candles, gels, inhalants and lotions, so too are many fragrances commonly used in aromatherapy.
Oils extracted from naturally-occurring materials are designated essential oils, and are used in aromatherapy. These oils are safe to use, being made of natural ingredients — unlike the synthetic form of fragrances that can cause allergies and irritation.
The history of applying essential oils goes back a long way. There is evidence that ancient Egyptian civilizations used them.
